Twelve-year-old Kyah begs her mom to let her participate in the levitation and teleportation experiments at Ceegris Labs since the compensation money ensures that her mom and sister won’t end up homeless again. As she begins her training in the levitation group, a painful migraine causes her to collapse. She awakens locked in the basement of the lab, a destination normally reserved for trainees whose powers have given them a hazy mind and a stare that can kill. Desperate to save her family from the streets, Kyah searches for a way to stop the progression of her own symptoms so she can resume training. But leaving the basement means forsaking the kids who are slowly morphing into dangerous creatures. Not trusting that anyone else will help, Kyah feels compelled to care for them, even if it puts her in imminent danger.
Jade, a fourteen-year-old in the teleportation group, quickly finds that the searing headaches from training at Ceegris Labs are even worse than the abuse from her father. She devises a plan to escape and live on her own in the wilderness of the Smokey Mountains, where no one will let her down again. However, the key to the safe with her identification documents is stolen before she can leave. Determined to get it back, Jade pushes her teleporting strength to perilous levels as her search leads to the dungeon in the basement.
As Kyah and Jade’s pain worsens, a Ceegris researcher reveals the existence of a cure, hidden outside the labs, that would require both of their powers and their ability to trust each other in order to retrieve it. With limited time before their stares turn deadly, they soon fear each other…
And the creatures they become.
