Jade isn’t sure it’s actually illegal to sleep on the ledge under the overpass, but the Nashville Police seem determined to take her back to her dad’s trash-hoarding trailer. Fourteen-year-olds should be able to use public property and not have to hang out with their drunken dad and his constant insults. So, when Jade is suddenly offered a mysterious spot in a program to develop superpowers, she takes it immediately. She’ll live and train at the lab, unable to leave, but at least she’ll be away from her father.
As she trains, Jade notices painful side-effects to the power serums she’s required to take, but the thrill of teleporting makes the severe headaches worth it. That is, until she doesn’t quite feel like herself anymore. Her mind hazes and she feels drawn toward the heat of those around her—a heat that she could devour for her own. On the verge of becoming a dangerous creature, Jade plots to search for the cure outside the lab. She just needs the help of Isaiah, one of the other trainees. But when they are also joined by Kyah and her own agenda to steal the cure, Jade wonders if they aren’t all doomed to a fate far worse than a future with an abusive father.
With powers that provoke an evil within, three young teens soon fear the threat of each other…
And the creatures they become.
