Hidden inside an old warehouse in Nashville, the secret soldier program at Ceegris Labs seems like a way for twelve-year-old Kyah to help her family. She just has to get through her levitation training using their experimental power serums. Then, Kyah’s mom will be given enough money that they’ll never have to worry about eviction notices ever again.
However, when Kyah develops severe headaches, she’s reassigned to the prison in the basement. The other kids down there have had terrible reactions to the power serums and are turning into creatures who can kill with just their stare. Then, they die themselves. As Kyah develops more and more of the awful symptoms, she is determined to break out of the basement and find the cure.
In the lab, Jade maneuvers her job as a trainer in the teleportation group very carefully, trying not to draw too much attention from the lab director who is quick to send kids to the basement prison. At fourteen years old, Ceegris Labs is her only escape from an angry father who spends his time either cussing at her or passing out drunk.
When Jade’s side effects worsen from using her powers, her search for the cure takes her on a perilous journey outside of the lab. Her quest is soon complicated when Kyah catches up with her. The clues indicate there’s only a single dose of the cure, and both girls desperately need it to stay alive.
